Sonajhuri at Santiniketan, Bolpur

Sonajhuri is a small patch of forest in the Khoai region of Santiniketan in Bolpur. The Khoai is a craggy landscape of small canyons formed by the constant erosion of wind and water on Red Laterite Soil. The forest primarily consists of Sonajhuri trees, which literally means “drops of gold” because in winter the trees shed their golden flowers and the whole forest starts raining gold – it’s a fascinating site!

You can take long walks within the Sonajhuri Forest treading along the small canyons and puddles or visit the nearby Adivasi (tribal) villages to marvel at the beautiful mud houses decked with colorful motifs on their walls.

Sonajhuri is also famous for its Haat (Weekly Market) known as Khoai Boner Annya Haat or Shanibarer Haat. The Haat is held every Saturday between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM. One is sure to find some of the most authentic products of local artisans including tribal jewelry, ethnic items of home decoration, clothes designed by local weavers, musical instruments and surely some lip smacking local Bengalee dishes like Pithey, Puli, Malpoa and much more.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Ashram – Santiniketan is about a kilometer from Sonajhuri and few other attractions like Kopai River, Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary is also 10 minutes from here. Around 08 kilometers from Sonajhuri Forest is the famous Kankalitala Temple, which is counted amongst the 51 Shaktipeeths of Sati.
